My Thoughts Exactly (6)
April 2008
‘Where
have all the bees gone?’
My family are convinced that I am
paranoid! Or at least that I am a kind of modern-day Cassandra, forever
declaring doom and gloom.
But I do find the disappearing bees
very worrying. First it was noticed in North America, but now it is here in the
UK.
What makes it more disturbing is that
the hives are found to be virtually empty, not full of dead bees.
Einstein, the acknowledged genius,
was known to say that when the bees went Mankind had four years left! Well,
that’s reassuring!
Various theories are being put
forward as to the reasons for this demise. Suggestions include Varroa mites;
Parasites; Cell phones; and GM crops that lead to ‘terminator’ seeds.
Where are the headlines? Where is the
government concern? Are we just waiting for it to happen?
We are constantly fed dire warnings
about global warming, (ad nausea!), but the bees and their disappearance
merit only a couple of lines here and there with no sense of urgency.
Mites and parasites are a regular
occurrence but rarely produce such devastation. Cell phones as such could affect
bees’ natural navigational skills.
But to my mind the biggest threat has
got to be GM crops with built-in pesticides that permeate the pollen too! Added
to that there are on-going experiments to produce ‘terminator’ seeds, plants
that produce infertile seeds that no farmers can replant. A nightmare scenario!
No bees- no
pollination!
GM crops purported to be the solution
for world starvation may actually become the cause of even greater starvation!
But then I am just paranoid. No-one
else seems unduly concerned! I must have got this wrong. Or maybe Einstein was
exaggerating! (Unlikely!)
And as I
calmed myself that all will be well, I read:-
‘In what is one of the worst
calamities to hit BAT populations in the United States, on average 90% of the
hibernating bats in four caves and mines in New York have died since last
winter!’
Four years! That sounds like an
over-estimation!

Editor’s Note:
Farmers world wide have reported
an 82% drop in available fertile seed varieties as a direct result of the
introduction of GM crops.
German scientists have discovered
that the BT contained in the pollen of GM crops is mutating the intestines of
bees. They are also puzzled as to why no scavengers have invaded the abandoned
hives to feed on the larvae and honey.
They shouldn’t be:
It is well documented and
established that animals in the wild shun GM crops and domestic cattle avoid
them wherever possible. It seems that nature doesn't believe the Monsanto or
American hype either.
